The first carpets that are observed in the region are simple, with geometric shapes, painted in pale ocher, mostly in brownish and bluish. According to ethnologists, many of the elements are inherited from the works of the Thracians and perceive the ancient symbols.
A description of Cypriot carpets and the history of tradition is published on UNESCO's website. To this day, women in the town of Chiprovtsi weave with the help of the vertical loom, which is considered an ancient form of weaving technique, while men care for the production of wool, its processing and dyeing.
The young people in Chiprovtsi learn to weave both in their families and in groups organized in the school and in the community center for weaving and coloring with natural dyes.
The basic raw materials in the traditional weaving are of vegetal (hemp, cotton, flax, corn stalks) or animal origin (wool, goat’s hair, silk). Hemp and flax are the earliest raw materials used in the Bulgarian lands. Cotton was first grown in the 17th century, silkworm breeding (sericulture) flourished at the end of the 18th century. Wool remained the most largely used stuff in home weaving during all periods.
