How did you start working on icons and wood carvings?
I started making icons because they are a huge challenge. Turning something old into new so people like it is not an easy task.
What inspires you in your everyday work?
Short answer is the end result. It's amazing when you see how the piece that was just a project in your head turn into a finished product. What inspires me most is my love for the tree and the wood carving. It is unique to give a second life to a tree.
Once you have started, did you take on a formal course or pursue some sort of education?
All my life the love for the tree have led me, which is the main reason why I started my work. I got to one level, and then I had to study the work of the old and new masters of the wood carvings. I have went to monasteries, churches, and exhibitions to gather observations about the craftsmanship of the masters. In the meantime I began to improve my technique and the carvings became more and more beautiful.
Share something specific about your work.
How would you describe it to someone who has never heard of it?
The feeling to breathe life into a piece of wood is incredible.
Where do you make the icons? What does your workshop look like?
He was so kind to share with us some exclusive photos from his workshop which we will soon release.
How do you get from the idea to the end product?
First I make a project and I draw it. If I like it, I start the carving. I carefully set the motives and the elements so as to bring inspiration.
What is this in your job, which inspires you at the moment?
There are two main things that make me most enthusiastic. One is the inspiration, especially if I am working on a new project that engages my entire consciousness. The other is the final result and the reactions of the people about the completed masterpiece.
